Daily Tasks to Keep Your Fence Updated

It’s completely normal for your wood fence to undergo some wear and tear over the years. However, it’s important to do some regular maintenance so it stays in great shape. In today’s blog, Carnahan-White lists some tips to keep your fence in top condition.

Replacing

Rain and consistent moisture can cause the wooden pickets in your fence to rot or mildew. As you’re beginning your initial maintenance, examine each of the boards and look for any signs of rot. To stop the decay from spreading, replace any pickets with signs of rot, such as:

  • Discolored wood
  • Soft or spongy to the touch
  • Cracks
  • Fungus growth
  • Musty smell

Cleaning

If your fence is starting to look dingy, muddy or dirty, it may be time to clean it. If there is any obstruction such as vines or unwanted foliage, remove it so you can clean your fence with nothing in the way. Once you’ve trimmed everything, it’s time to start washing.

Rinse your fence with a garden hose so that each panel is covered to start. Next, if you have a power washer or pressure washer, fill it with a cleaning solution or detergent meant for wooden decks and fences. Then spray in a fanning motion so that your fence is completely covered with the cleaning solution. Let the solution soak for about 10 minutes before rinsing it one last time with water.

Sealant

To prevent any moisture from being trapped in the wood of your fence, you need to add sealant. A sealant protects your fence from sun, wind, and water damage. You can tell if your fence needs sealant if water soaks into the wood.

If you’re going to seal your fence, let your fence completely dry out so you don’t trap any moisture into your fence. Next, apply the sealant all over your fence panels. Make sure you brush it into all the grooves and sides so you don’t miss any spots. You should reseal your fence every 2-5 years to prevent damage from occurring.

Painting/Stain

Paint can peel or fade over time due to harsh sunlight or weather conditions. If your fence is clean, sealed, and repaired, you can add a new layer of stain or paint to make it look like new again.
