Summer Maintenance Tips for Wooden Privacy Fences
At Carnahan-White Fence Company , our experts are well-versed in custom fences and ironwork, including ongoing maintenance to keep these structures looking and functioning at their best. In this blog, we’ll discuss the best ways to maintain wooden privacy fences during the summer months when you’re more likely to face specific weather and vegetation-related challenges.
Walk the perimeter of your property and inspect the fence
A thorough inspection of your privacy fence can give you a good idea of what maintenance issues (if any) you’ll be facing this summer. A few things to look for while inspecting privacy fences include:
- Evidence of wood rot
- Moisture around the bottom of the fence
- Overgrown foliage
- Rodent or insect infestations
- Wobbly posts
- Damaged sections
Although a seasonal inspection of your fence may not seem all that important, it truly is essential! What starts as a small problem can very quickly and easily balloon into something much more serious if it’s not taken care of right away.
Trim and clear away overgrown vegetation
Check for unwanted vines and weeds growing up against your privacy fence. You’ll also want to look for any trees that are hanging over the top of your fence, as they can easily damage it in the event of a storm. Trim those trees, remove any dead or damaged branches, and clear away any vines, weeds, and unwanted vegetation that has started growing on or near your fence.
Re-stain the fence (if needed)
Once all the vegetation has been cleared away and you’ve power washed your fence to remove additional dirt and grime, you may want to stain your wood fence if it needs it. Although you don’t need to do this every time you complete a maintenance check on your fence, but a UV-blocking wood stain should last through the summer months.
Pest problems?
If you have pest problems with your fence, such as termites, you need to take care of those problems ASAP. There are do-it-yourself methods of termite control or you can contact professionals to take care of the problem for you.
