Tennis Court Fence FAQs

At Carnahan White Fence Company, we specialize in custom-made fences and gates, including sports fences.

Today, we are helping to answer some frequently asked questions regarding tennis court fencing.

A tennis court fence is typically a border of metal chain links, chain mesh or chain wire that surrounds a court. This is, by far, the sturdiest and most impact-resistant fence type as well as the most commonly used.

The average tennis court fence size is from 10 to 12 feet in height, or 3 to 3.6 meters. The lowest can be 8 inches tall. The standard fence length is 23.77 meters long and 8.23 meters wide. Choosing a height depends on the court material. A clay or sand-filled turf court, for example, reduces ball bounce, requiring a lower height fence.

The average cost ranges between $5,000 to $12,000 depending on the material used and length of the court.

Vinyl Polymer Fences

For this material, the cost is normally between $10 to $40 per linear foot, with the highest grade costing around $60.

Tennis court fences have either hard or soft material. Soft fences are made of fabric or mesh that is stretched between posts. For metal fence courts, a layer of zinc, aluminum or vinyl coating protects the wiring from rust and corrosion. Our company dips our fence material into molten hot zinc to give an added layer of protection. For polymer coatings, the major colors come in dark green, olive green and brown-black. The knuckled top caps on the fence serve as added security and deter climbers.

When it comes to sports like basketball, a fence is optional. For tennis courts, fences are required to keep runaway balls from getting lost or to prevent wind or debris from affecting the players’ performance.

Wood frame and windscreen fences have windscreen stretched between wood posts without metal fabric or mesh. The windscreen itself forms the fence enclosure. Repairing it is more affordable and it allows for more open windflow onto the court. Post and fabric mesh uses ultraviolet stabilized nylon or polypropylene cord netting stretched along wood or metal posts with top and bottom cabling. They lack the stability of a hard chain link fence but have greater visibility for when the court is not in use. These mesh fences are often used at golf courses.

Welded wire fences are made up of heavy-duty wire that is impact-resistant and welded together in a square or rectangular grid mesh. Welded wire forms a self-supporting panel that does not require top or bottom rails, and looks lighter than chain link. Steel bar fences are a grid pattern of narrow bars and heavy wire welded together. They also have self-supporting panels that do not require rail supports. Because of the harder substance, steel bar posts do not have a thick, bulky appearance.

Chain link fencing for tennis courts is the most cost-efficient and has resistance to corrosion and rust. Our experienced pros at Carnahan-White Fence Company can give advice from the beginning to the end of your project and install any type of tennis court fence for a great rate.
